Keys for identifying hazardous substances
10/02/2025
Given that the origin and streams of hazardous substances can be very diverse, its search and characterisation procedure is already included in the current regulations for several types of hazardous substances. Despite this, it is not unified, and it is not clearly specified who should do it, nor the steps to be followed. Even though, we can establish three key steps for doing so.

The pocedure should include three steps:
- Investigation: a preliminary investigation is necessay in order to dtermine the presence of hazardous substances. This must be done before undertaking any maintenance,
rehabilitation or transformation work. - Identification: it is a fundamental aspect of the proper handling of hazardous waste. It is mandatary to take samples by using the most appropriate mechanisms for each type of waste adopting the appropriate precautions and send them to an accredited laboratory.
- Quantification: one the hazardous substances are identified, a quantification should be done to determine their quantity, location, type, and condition.
- Inventory: finally, with all the preceding data, an inventory will be elaborated, which will enable us to know where and how the hazardous substances are and to be aware of their risks.
