Chromium VI and lead in paint

27/11/2024

Chromium VI and lead are hazardous substances commonly found in certain types of paints, particularly those used for outdoor applications, because of their corrosion resistance and their high durability. But, when disturbed, such as during demolition, these paintings possess significant risks to workers and the environment, especially high when using fast-rotating tools or when exposed to elevated temperatures.

How to detect it

To detect their presence in paints, rapid testing methods are often used for ensuring that safety protocols are followed and as a guarantee of their security.

One such method is the handheld X-ray fluorescent (HXRF) scanner, which identifies substances but is expensive and requires regular maintenance.

Besides this one, chemical indicator tests are more affordable. They involve scratching the paint and applying liquid solutions that use the discoloration as an indicator of the concentration of these substances.
