POPs: everything we know about them
11/10/2023

Persistent Organic Pollutants, or POPs, are a complicated topic within the decontamination industry. Throughout a lasting historical period, we used those substances extensively for multiple applications. In the last two decades, we have begun to strictly regulate them and aim for their complete elimination.
As time goes by, more substances are considered POPs: and many times, we can’t even catalogue them until we encounter them directly.
On the other hand, the effects that POPs can have on the environment and human health are in constant evaluation. Only careful audit and time can tell the real lasting impact they have.
In order to approach this question, the EDI has conducted a dialogue with a member of the European Commission, Mr Enrique García. During this dialogue, Mr Enrique García and Mr Javier Rodríguez, on behalf of the EDI, discuss the lasting impacts of the POPs, the recent legistlation of it and its relation to the Circular Economy Action Plan.
As Mr Enrique García puts it:
“We are trying to approach the issue of hazardous substances and how they affect human health and the environment holistically.”
If you are interested in the topic of POPs, you can read the complete interview in the EDI Special Publication 2022. This document is available for free: check out its digital version here!
